Webber supports funding to improve Selfridge runways

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Michael Webber on Thursday proposed approving $152 million for runway improvements at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County to support the new F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets that President Donald Trump announced will be coming to the base.

“Michigan has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure a new fighter mission at Selfridge,” said Webber, R-Rochester Hills. “We need to act quickly to approve improvement funds on the timeline requested by the Air Force, or we risk jeopardizing the future of the entire base. We need to get serious about getting this done right and on time.”

Webber’s amendments to a fiscal year 2026 supplemental budget bill would have replaced the proposed spending with a clean funding plan for Selfridge that mirrors funding approved earlier this year on a bipartisan vote by the state House, which was led by state Rep. Ron Robinson, R-Utica.

Webber said it was unfortunate that the effort to approve the Selfridge funds under the timeline needed by the Air Force was rejected on a partisan basis in the Senate.

“If we don’t get these funds out the door now, we risk missing the window to meet federal requirements,” Webber said. “We can’t afford to let that happen. We need to set aside party politics, coordinate with our federal partners and make this new mission a reality.”
